Le district scolaire de Yelm souhaitait une solution pratique et temporaire de 8 200 pieds carrés de salles de classe, sous un même toit, pour accueillir sa population étudiante croissante. Cette structure, développée par Modern Building Systems, a été conçue et contractée dans un souci d'efficacité et de réutilisation. Elle comprend six salles de classe, deux salles de repos et deux laboratoires informatiques.
Les salles de classe sont situées le long d'un couloir qui fait toute la longueur du bâtiment, ce qui simplifie l'accès à l'intérieur du bâtiment et permet d'obtenir une ambiance intérieure similaire à celle de l'école principale. Le bardage extérieur et la toiture ont également été conçus pour s'harmoniser avec les bâtiments environnants. La conception a été difficile car le terrain existant était rocailleux et nécessitait une adaptation exacte de l'empreinte au sol.
L'utilisation de la construction modulaire dans un scénario de locaux temporaires a permis au district scolaire d'utiliser au mieux les fonds et de s'assurer que les salles de classe de qualité étaient prêtes pour le début de l'année scolaire sans perturber les cours. Modern Building Systems a fourni une solution efficace qui répondait aux contraintes budgétaires et temporelles.
Les petites fenêtres en verre trempé permettent de maintenir le coût des matériaux de construction à un niveau bas tout en offrant une meilleure isolation, en créant plus d'espace d'enseignement à l'intérieur et en permettant de réaliser des économies d'énergie à l'avenir. Des détecteurs de mouvement dans l'ensemble du bâtiment permettent de réaliser des économies d'énergie.
